What house slab work on the Central Coast actually involves

A house slab is the piece of concrete everything else depends on, and most of the work happens before the truck turns up. The site is cleared and cut to level, formwork is set, trenches for the footings and beams are dug to the slab design, reinforcement is placed and tied, and services passing through the slab are set in position — where they cannot be moved afterwards.

What happens before any concrete arrives

Slab design is not a concreter's call. AS 2870-2011 gives standard designs for some soil classifications and covers engineering design where those do not apply, so the site classification decides which your block gets. A good concreter tells you whether that design is buildable with the access available.

Central Coast blocks tend to fall into three kinds. Around Tuggerah Lake and Brisbane Water the cut tends to be small, but the ground can hold water after rain, and concrete cannot go into a waterlogged excavation. Older coastal lots at Terrigal, Avoca Beach or Woy Woy tend to be narrow, and a truck may not reach the back. West toward Ourimbah and Kariong the ground tends to slope, and the site cut grows with it.

Do I need an engineer for a house slab?

Can a slab be poured in winter or after heavy rain?

Not into standing water, in any season: concrete cannot be placed into a waterlogged excavation. The flat land around Tuggerah Lake tends to hold surface water longer than the sloping ground inland.
